Welcome to Fremont
The City of Fremont is the farthest south in Alameda County, just minutes from San Jose and the Silicon Valley. Previously known as Washington Township, Fremont was formed by joining several smaller communities. Fremont's history goes back to the Gold Rush, although agriculture was the bedrock of the local economy with orchards of olive trees and acres of grapes.
The motion picture industry was born in The Niles Canyon District of Fremont. Silent film star Broncho Billy Anderson, a partner in Essanay Film Manufacturing Company built a studio in Niles in 1912. It was only the second studio in California at the time. The iconic image of Charlie Chaplin toddling away from the camera in The Tramp was filmed here, on a country lane, in 1915. Charlie made 5 films here. Today the Niles District looks much as it did then. The Edison Theater is now the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum, housing a collection of memorabilia and a collection of files, books, posters, photos, and documents. On Saturday nights, the museum harkens back to the silent film era, screening movies to live piano accompaniment.
Since 1996, Fremont has been “Tree City USA”. Boasting more than 55,000 trees in parks and along city boulevards, Fremont is a family-friendly community offering several community parks, historical sites, Central Park with Lake Elizabeth, Aqua Adventure Waterpark, a sports complex, tennis center, Fremont Park Golf Center, Olive Hyde Art Gallery, three program centers and four community centers. Enrichment programs are also offered through the recreation department.
The 1950s and 1960s were a time of industrialization; this rapid development linked Fremont with Silicon Valley. Fremont was the birthplace of the first Mac Computer. Although the Apple Factory ceased production in 1993, Cirrus Logic, Mattson Technology, and Nextlink California call Fremont home.
