San Leandro is a suburb of Oakland and San Francisco, sitting on the western edge of Alameda County and the San Francisco Bay. A moderately sized city of 85,000 with a mild climate and diverse population, San Leandro is easily accessible by car, bus, BART, and freeway.
Settled by Spanish explorers, San Leandro gained fame during the late 1800s and early 1900s for its cherry orchards. The first Cherry Festival was held in 1909, celebrating the delicious fruit. This tradition continues marking over 100 years. Things may have changed, but San Leandro’s pride continues as attendees partake in food, a beer garden, live entertainment, a Kid’s Zone, and Farmer’s Market selling………..cherries!
San Leandro is proud of its extensive park system including 23 parks and recreation facilities including neighborhood and community parks, swimming pools, and sports fields. The San Leandro Shoreline Recreation Area boasts a full-service marina with 455 berths, a boat ramp, two yacht clubs, three restaurants, a waterfront hotel, two golf courses, a driving range, a par course, park and picnic areas, and the shoreline trail for strolling or running.
Shopping choices are bountiful, The Bayfair Center is a regional shopping mall, Pelton Plaza is downtown, Marina Square is anchored by Nordstrom Rack, The Westgate Center a mega-strip mall is anchored by Costco. If shopping is your recreational activity, you don’t have to drive far.
